Wild Atlantic Way

Doon House, set within the historic Doonreagan Estate in Connemara, County Galway, is an elegant nineteenth-century country house overlooking a sheltered bay of the Atlantic Ocean on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.

Occupying an elevated and private position, the house enjoys panoramic sea and mountain views while offering refined luxury accommodation for up to ten guests, available for holidays throughout the year. It combines historic character and timeless style with modern comforts, making it ideal for family gatherings, special occasions or peaceful extended stays in the west of Ireland.

The house features four spacious and beautifully furnished reception rooms designed for both relaxation and entertaining. The welcoming entrance hall, with a solid fuel stove, opens onto a wide terrace with garden furniture and sweeping sea views. A gracious drawing room with an open fireplace and multiple seating areas leads into a bright conservatory overlooking the grounds. The dining room seats ten guests comfortably and includes a sunlit bay window for additional seating, while the library offers comfortable sofas, a television and an extensive collection of books. The kitchen connects directly to the dining room and is equipped with a Lacanche range, a central island and a large table suitable for informal meals or buffet suppers. A separate pantry supports daily housekeeping, and there is also a downstairs cloakroom.

Upstairs, five generous double bedrooms provide calm and comfortable accommodation, supported by three modern bathrooms. High-speed fibre broadband, heating and electricity are included in the rental, making Doon House suitable for both leisurely holidays and longer stays. Independent on-site catering can be arranged on request. Guests also have access to a laundry with washing machine, drying room and tumble dryer, as well as a dedicated games and reading room offering pool, ping-pong, chess, a puppet theatre and thousands of books.

The Doonreagan Estate extends across approximately sixty acres of landscaped grounds nurtured to support wildlife and biodiversity. Ancient walkways and old droving roads lead through an arboretum that comes alive in spring, past an ornamental lake, and towards Cashel Hill, offering spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean. The foreshore provides private sea swimming facilities, a sea pool and a sauna, creating a rare coastal retreat in unspoilt Connemara. Gardens planted with azaleas and rhododendrons thrive in the local soil and remain inviting throughout the year.

Rich in history, the estate has roots stretching back to prehistoric times and has long attracted writers, artists and performers seeking inspiration and seclusion. Doon House was built in the early nineteenth century and has since been associated with notable cultural figures, while remaining a deeply peaceful and private family home. Although secluded, the estate is conveniently located close to the vibrant villages of Roundstone and Clifden, with their restaurants, pubs and traditional music, and within easy reach of beaches, rivers and outdoor activities for which Connemara is renowned.
